The Core Emotions of Anger, Sadness, and Fear
I like to consider emotions as allies. They are here to help you make better decisions and connect more fully in your relationships. Depending on the situation, your feelings are also here to protect you. They each have a unique purpose, and when you can begin to see them as highly intelligent forces that are here to serve you, then you neednât waste energy fighting them. Of course, it doesnât mean you will like every feeling that visits, as some feelings like grief are painful, but the point is to know your feelings and accept them as they are.
Below I am going to list out three of the core emotions that most people struggle with: anger, sadness, and fear, as well as what the purpose of each is. Pay attention to how the descriptions land for you. Notice what reactions you have and jot them down on the blank lines following each emotion or in a journal. Some questions to consider while reading these descriptions:
Does this make sense to me?
How was this emotion expressed or shown to me in my life?
How did mom respond to these emotions when I expressed them to her?
Were there other adults in my life that helped me identify and/or regulate these emotions?
Do I want to have more freedom to feel this emotion in a healthy and adaptive way? If not, why? If yes, what do I hope more freedom to feel would offer me?
If this feeling were a friend to me, what would it be telling me?
